“Gracias a la vida que me ha dado tanto…
I am grateful to life, because it has given me so much…”
In our musical performance Mercedes Sosa: the voice of the voiceless we celebrate the life and work of Mercedes Sosa with the greatest respect for her family, the Argentine people and this world-renowned singer and activist. She played an important, unifying role internationally. As a powerful icon, she gave many South American dictators sleepless night. Through her attitude to life, she proved that culture survives politics.
Her life is like a beautiful poncho of colorful threads woven together into a unique pattern. She shared her stage with great artists to share a universal message: the love for the land and the people, and for each person’s right on their own authenticity in the grand scheme of things. She received several Grammy Awards and nominations. The latest was a posthumous Latin Grammy Award for best
folk album and her services as an ambassador for UNICEF. She still has thousands of fans.
With her roots in Argentine folk music, she made La Nueva Cancion famous. We experience her as one of South America’s greatest voices: the voice of the people who had no voice, the voice of the people. We let this beloved voice shine together in our performance!
She accompanied herself on the bombo, a heavy drum as a combination of bass and percussion that evoked a deep-rooted primal feeling. In her voice, a rich emotional palette could be heard of the poignancy and tender softness of
Pacha Mama to the fire of protest social
injustice towards the weaker members of society.
She became a powerful ally for ex-president of Argentina Cristina Fernández de Kirchner in promoting women’s rights and the persecution of those who misbehaved during the military junta
(1976-1983). When she died in 2009, the president declared
three days of national mourning.
